Stopping the 'Six Sigma Data Shuffle' - How to put your best people on tasks that
really matter, instead of massaging, scrubbing, manipulating data from here until

What is the ‘Six Sigma Data Shuffle’? Most quality initiatives - and especially Six Sigma - use
data to drive business decisions. But most programs ignore the true cost of getting that data and
expect highly compensated star performers to 'do whatever it takes' to get good data. Often the result
is a suboptimized system that retards the quality initiative.
This presentation will put the ‘Six Sigma Data Shuffle’ under the microscope. We’ll explore the
costs in dollars and time to get to the bottom of the frustration expressed by the President of
one Six Sigma company: “I had these two high-powered and highly compensated engineers – really two
of my best people – spending hours scrubbing data and building databases to get the information they needed for their projects."
We’ll examine one company's eight CTQs for a quality data system, and four alternatives
they considered in meeting those requirements. Instead of quality efforts that starve because of a lack
of good data, an effective quality data system helps build and increase momentum.
