With the second generation of ISO 14001 now in effect, organizations and pundits
alike have taken a closer look at what constitutes an ISO 14001- conforming system
– or have they taken their eye off the ball. To parody the marketing claim of The
Enquirer, inquiring minds want to know: is there value in ISO?
In our brief session, we take a closer look at what drives ISO 14001, not from the
registrar’s perspective, but from the end users’ perspective, since they are the
ones footing the bill to both maintain their EMSs and pay their registrars to certify
their systems conform to ISO 14001. We will also take a sneak peak at several emerging
“heavyweights”, the WEEE and RoHS European Directives and the US’s Sarbanes-Oxley
Act that focuses on corporate accounting practices and public disclosure of previously
confidential records, and whether these emerging regulatory constraints may have
an influence on EMSs.
From research compiled for this presentation, we will look more closely at some
key changes to ISO 14001:2004, and provide our 10 key tips for enhancing an organization’s
EMS, and cutting right to the chase.
This session is designed to be interactive, so bring your most challenging EMS/ISO
questions/issues for open discussion.
