A Quick Start Guide to Strategic Planning
Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation
Naapu Division – COO Office, P.O. Box 3343, Mashantucket, CT 06338-3343
For some, Strategic Planning is a very intimidating term; there is much uncertainty
as to where to begin or what to do. The purpose of this session is to explain the
Strategic Planning process so that other departments/organizations can benefit from
its use; Strategic Planning will help any organization become productive and focused
on what is truly important in order to achieve excellence in whatever endeavor the
department/organization is striving to achieve. This session includes details of
a successful, quick-start method for developing and implementing a Strategic Plan.
The first steps in the Strategic Planning process include identifying a team and
defining a process and timeline. These steps are followed by an assessment phase
(both internal and external) during which quality tools are applied. After the assessment
phase is completed, a mission and vision are developed (clearly defining the department’s/organization’s
purpose). This is followed by the identification of high-level goals, strategies
and actions.
As the Strategic Planning process begins to unfold, the team will realize that developing
the plan is much easier than originally anticipated. This process helps team members
to focus on the “vital few versus the trivial many”. Once the plan has been finalized,
the team will refocus upon implementation and continuous improvement strategies.
